Improve Memory and Prevent Brain Deterioration
July 2, 2009 by memory improvement
Human memory is a truly amazing phenomenon. It is always a source of wonder that seemingly insignificant occurrences may create lasting memories for one person while other people cannot even recall details of major events in their life. There are many factors that influence this apparent disparity.
It is sometimes said that a healthy brain never forgets anything. Unless affected by injury or disease the brain never loses anything. Forgetting something is actually a result of:
1. Not storing the facts properly in the first place.
2. Failure to store the facts in a manner in which they can be recalled.
3. Inability to recall facts at the time although they are still safely recorded in the brain. Who among us has not had the experience of “forgetting” something only to have it pop into consciousness at the most unlikely time?
Problem 1 can be overcome by concentration. If one is distracted and does not store facts to start with then there is very little chance of recalling them later. Memory has two phases – Short Term and Long Term Memory.
It is believed that up to 50 percent of information we receive is lost almost immediately and a further 20 percent vanishes within 24 hours. An example would be a telephone number or other ten digit number. Unless a special effort is made its gone almost instantly. Some of these short term memories go on to become long term memories.
For instance your best friend’s phone number would have started out as a short term memory but has now become part of long term memory and can be readily recalled several years later. Scientists are still uncertain as to the exact reasons why some facts are lost while others go on to create lasting memories.
However, it is safe to assume that some special importance is attached to that information for one reason or another. In the world of information overload we live in there are constant distractions and information competing for attention. Chances of recalling facts are significantly improved by paying attention to those that we need to remember later.
There are several techniques that can be used to ensure sufficient attention to important facts. The most common among them would be repetition. Most of us would probably recall having learnt our multiplication tables in this way.
Writing notes and personalizing the facts ie. writing ideas in one’s own words also helps. However, it is important not to fall into the trap of relying on notes as a substitute for remembering. Notes should be used to reinforce a memory not as an alternative to it.
Writing down facts surrounding and supporting an idea as well as the theory and methodology leading up to certain facts also help in recall. Complex mathematical formulae would be an example. Formulae comprised of abstract symbols and numbers can usually be quite hard to recall on their own.
However, if one commits to memory the principles from which the formula is derived the symbols often become a lot easier to recall. Understanding the concepts behind the final outcome makes things less fuzzy.
The fuzzier things are the harder they are to remember. Breaking down facts into manageable chunks to concentrate on helps immensely as well as there is a limit on how much information can be assimilated at a given time.
Avoiding distractions is another important consideration in ensuring that the facts are stored right – it is a lot harder replace incorrect information than it is to store it right in the first place.
Problems 2 and 3 are closely connected to how we recall information. Memories are made by creating connections – connections with experiences through all our senses. Perhaps you have had the experience of a smell or sound triggering a memory of long ago.
The more connections we create the better the chances of recall. This is why mnemonics are commonly used as an aid to memory. The more ridiculous or unusual the association the more likely it is to be recalled rather than fade into insignificance among the millions of other connections.
Using mental pegs is another technique that works very well. Associate facts with unusual images or rhymes. For instance to remember names and faces one may look at a prominent facial feature, create an exaggerated version of it and connect it with the name. Say Leon with rather long hair may become a mental image of a Lion with a mane. Lion then quickly converts to Leon making it a lot easier than simply trying to recall the name of the guy with long hair!
Unfortunately as we age our brains begin to degenerate and memory deteriorates along with it. There are 4 main reasons for this degeneration.
1. Reduction in Neurotransmitters, especially acetylcholine causes decline in brain function.
2. Reduced blood circulation. The brain uses a significant proportion of all blood. Any impediment to blood flow therefore has a huge impact on brain function.
3. Effects of Cortisol. As a response to stresses cortisol is produced in the brain which damages the cells in the Hippocampus. The Hippocampus is instrumental in converting short term memories to long term ones. The damage in the hippocampus also triggers further production of cortisol setting off a ever increasing cycle of cell damage.
4. Free radical damage. Free radicals are atoms that have an electron imbalance and are constantly seeking to steal an electron to make itself whole. This process of stealing electrons from cells causes cell damage. Brain cells are no exception and brain cell damage also occurs due to free radical activity.
There are many common sense approaches to limiting and preventing brain degeneration:
Proper diet – limit intake of salt cholesterol and fat while eating plenty of fresh fruits and foods high in antioxidants. Regular Exercise – avoid becoming overweight. Control Blood pressure Control and limit stress Limiting alcohol intake and not smoking helps reduce free radical damage. Increase intake of Omega 3 fatty acids – found in large quantities in fish -helps combat free radical damage. Avoid even minor head trauma – When engaging in activities which could result in jarring of the brain use adequate protection. Regular jarring, even minor levels has been connected with higher incidence of dementia.
There are also several not so obvious strategies that have emerged from recent studies into the brain.
Depression can affect the way the brain processes information and retrieves it. Therefore avoiding or minimizing depression can positively impact on brain function in later years. Socializing and involvement with family and community activities is recommended.
Mental exercise. “Use it or lose it”. Stimulating your brain with mental exercises such as crossword puzzles, board games or even taking up a new hobby or learning a musical instrument has been shown to increase the number of brain cells and connections between brain cells. These activities improve what is known as “Brain Plasticity”.
Certain drugs such as aspirin and anti-inflammatories as well as cholesterol reducing drugs in the “Statin” group are also believed to deter the onset of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Herbal supplements such as Gingko Biloba which is credited with improving blood circulation may also help.
While aging and its consequences cannot be halted it is clear that there is much that can be done to improve brain health and memory.

The company that Mr Zizi is developing is called ZiziWorld.
Why Do we Think Ziziworld products are Unique to the Current Success Books?
Research shows that most people who attend Home Bases Business or success seminars relapse into their old habits of failure, and become more depressed. As a teacher, mentor, and cognitive trainer, Mr Zizi observed how those success or business seminars lack the teaching methodology. This led him to create learning materials that stretch the learning period in a coherent way to ensure learning is taking place as opposed to the current ‘two days’ success seminars,
Educational psychologists will tell you that the following barriers to success are due to the following
inadequate instruction
insufficient exposure and practice
Deficient word recognition skills
Deficient memory capacity and functioning
significant language deficiencies
inadequate comprehension monitoring and self-evaluation
Unfamiliarity with the seven intelligences of individuals, text features and task demands, Unfamiliarity with philosophical, and neuropsychology
Undeveloped strategies.
Insufficient time for learning
The objective of Andre Zizi Freedom Education Program for Empowerment and Enrichment is not to cover certain set topics but to facilitate, accelerate learning and thinking. In considering the subject objectives
1) To remember general goals such as how to think your way to success, being willing to explore ideas contrary to ones own beliefs, knowing which data or information are relevant and how to find the information to support your desired outcome, and how to use your instinct all the way to success ‘ The Conative Power of The Mind’

Golf Swing Improvement – Super Tips That Work For Your Golf Swing Now
July 2, 2009 by memory improvement
It’s important to remember, your golf swing is what drives your score; not your clubs or ball. Most golfers don’t know that eighty percent of the world’s golfers have a handicap of 18 or more. When you’re playing golf badly it isn’t a lot of fun.
Overall, you generally want to play golf with confidence. If you’ve hit with your golf driver perfectly once, you can do it every time; the subconscious mind knows the correct number and sequence of muscle contractions and nerve impulses needed, called muscle memory. Visualize where you would like the ball to land, as you swing.
As the body matures, the ability to rotate the upper torso is affected by age, and the hand action can also slow down requiring a slightly stronger grip. Make sure to use the proper technique. At the end of a swing, the weight has shifted almost entirely to the left foot, the body is fully turned to the left and the hands are above the left shoulder with the club hanging down over the players’ back.
Standing over the ball for too long a time and wondering whether you’re going to swing the club correctly can easily result in a skewed shot, or completely missing the ball. Use the muscles in your legs and trunk when you swing. Putting can become a nightmare and a condition called the ‘yips’ has affected not only amateurs but professionals as well; get expert advice and consider a golf swing aid.
Before you swing, make sure you’re relaxed; contract all your muscles tightly for a moment and then relax them. After the ball is hit, the follow-through stage consists of a continued rotation to the left. Ask your golf pro to evaluate your posture while swinging. Swing slowly and steadily using a nice rhythm. Use the basic ‘hitchhiker’ position when you’re working on your backswing.
It’s no secret; most of the professional players actively participate in workouts. You can get rid of shoulder problems with some simple techniques. Don’t underestimate the value of fitness when it comes to your golf swing and your overall golf game.
Keep in mind that with some golf swing aids, you may still need advice or help from an expert. Overall, investing in aids will greatly improve your golf swing and your golf game. There are aids that will help you with swing alignment.
Look for golf swing aids at your local golf course. You can find aids that will help you with your wrist and arm position. There are golf swing aids that act as driving range simulators.
Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just starting out, pick just one aid and go to work on your swing. Golf swing aids come in all shapes and sizes including apparel type accessories to correct alignment or a golf club add-on accessory to monitor your swing. Before buying any aid, check with an expert to get an idea of what problem you need to work on first; backlift, momentum of downward thrust or stance for example.
If you’re looking for an aid to improve your stance they’re not hard to find. In any case, stick to just one aid at a time; don’t load up on them.
When you play a round of golf, concentrate on improving your swing, putting or something specific that day; have a plan in mind. If you’ve hit with your golf driver perfectly once, you can do it every time. Now is the time to fix that golf swing forever.

Healthy Aging | How To Keep Your Memory Sharp As You Age
July 2, 2009 by memory improvement
Forgot where you left the car keys? Can’t remember your mailman’s name? Don’t worry. Even though many age-related cognitive changes are a matter of biology, you can take steps to ward them off as you get older. Practicing good health habits and exercising your mind can protect your brain-and “probably reduce the amount of mental decline, or push it back later into life,” says Cathy McEvoy, Ph.D., a professor of aging studies at the University of South Florida in Tampa..
Here’s How to Challenge Your Mind:
* GIVE YOURSELF A MENTAL WORKOUT.
A recent study at Pennsylvania State University found that participating in 10 sessions of cognitive exercises designed to boost reasoning skills, memory and mental processing speed staved-off cognitive decline in older adults over a five-year period. You also can challenge your mind at home with activities such as crossword puzzles, math games and Sudoku and by reading material that takes you out of your mental comfort zone (Old English literature, anyone?). It also helps to learn a new skill, whether it’s a foreign language, a musical instrument or a computer program.
* GET MOVING
Aerobic exercise boosts circulation-the flow of blood and oxygen-to the brain, which enhances mental performance. It also produces endorphins, which can positively affect how your mind feels and functions. And it increases metabolism, which can help you control your weight and lower your risk of developing medical conditions that could compromise brain function.
* MAINTAIN SNOOZE CONTROL
Sleep is crucial for brain function: “It helps with encoding new information, and it’s important for efficiency in retrieving information from memory,” McEvoy explains. That’s why it’s essential to carve out ample time for shut-eye and to take steps to enhance the quality of your slumber. How?
- Exercise during the day (not close to bedtime)
- Eat early enough so that dinner is digested by the time you turn in
- Avoid caffeine after lunch
- Get sun exposure around midday to keep your body’s sleep-wake clock in sync
* EAT A BRAIN-BOOSTING DIET
When it comes to warding off cognitive decline and dementia, fruits and vegetables are among the best foods for thought, because they are rich in antioxidants, nutrients that protect your brain and body from free radicals, those unstable molecules that dull the brain.
A study at the Rush Institute for Healthy Aging in Chicago found that older adults who regularly eat less than one serving of vegetables a day are far more likely to experience cognitive decline than those who eat almost three servings a day. Consuming small amounts of alcohol, particularly antioxidant-rich red wine, also can help protect against dementia and other forms of cognitive loss, McEvoy notes.
* GET AN UPPER HAND ON STRESS
“Chronic stress is not good for the brain,” Dr. Small says. “In animals, we’ve found that it increases production of cortisol [a stress hormone], which in turn shrinks the memory centers in the brain.”
To prevent these detrimental effects, practice deep breathing exercises a few times a day, Dr. Small suggests, and find some form of long-term relaxation technique-whether it’s yoga, meditation or tai chi-that works for you.
But remember: These stress-relieving techniques “have to be just as chronic as the stress itself to have real impact,” McEvoy says.
Keep your mind actively engaged every day, and you’ll stay sharp in the years ahead.

How To Improve Your Sightreading
July 1, 2009 by memory improvement
As most professional musicians will say; no matter how long you’ve been playing for there is always need for improvement. Most of us have discovered this already, and we can all do with some improvement in our sight-reading skills.
The goal with sight-reading is to be able to really get through a piece of music without needing to stop or start the song, and to be able to do so when you have just been given the song and never heard it ever before. Most musical circles – especially for theater and orchestra, but also around studio and professional circles – will expect you to read ‘on demand.’ You could lose or gain a gig depending on how well you are able to do this. Although those with good ears may be able to develop strategies to get around sight-reading, this is not always going to save us and isn’t to our advantage either.
Benefits and Reasons to Practice Sight-Reading
Sight-reading improves your overall playing and musical skills significantly. For starters, your scale playing techniques drastically improve. Sight-reading also teaches you song and music dynamics, so you can understand both sound and feel. Sight-reading will improve your octave skills too, as well as your arpeggio techniques and your general theory. As you practice with a metronome, and get a feel for standard rhythms, you will greatly improve in your timing and phrasing.
Lastly, sight-reading will even help you to improve on your own songwriting, as you get used to phrasing and dynamics. All of these will help you pick up a piece of music quickly and on the fly, making you a better all-round musician and giving you some very sought-after skills. Bettering your sight reading really just comes with practice.
How to Practice your Sight-Reading
Practicing – like a lot of your musical skills – really only requires about 15 minutes a day. By doing this, you will already see your entire outlook on your instrument dramatically change within just a few days.
Firstly you need to always play along with a metronome, and play through a piece of music without stopping. This is important. Even if you make mistakes, keep going. This will train you to read without needing to stop and look at your instrument, or work out what the sheet music is telling you. You can clear up the mistakes next time around. Once you have the song done flawlessly, move to the next song.
You should start with easier music, and go through the entire music book. Once you’ve done that, get more music. Music training is also reflex and memory training – once you know a song, you don’t need the music anymore, and you’re not improving your sight-reading by going through it again – you’re just rehashing what you know already.
Musical phrases are very much like words and once you know the words you don’t need to learn new words. You need to always be practicing new material – by continuously getting more musical phrases into your memory, you will greatly improve your ability to read music on the fly when you see recognizable phrases.
When practicing sight-reading, don’t look at your fretboard – keep your eyes on the music. This will get you used to reading instead of watching yourself play. This also helps you to get a ‘feel’ for your instrument, making playing it very natural for you, and training you to rely on your muscle memory and not your sight when playing.
You need to consistently work on your sight-reading, just as you do your technique, interpretation, rudimentals and scales. You should sometimes test yourself with an audience – they will be more critical of your ability, and will point out where you may be going wrong. If you have a good ear, try and find ways to depend on the sheet music. This will actually make you a better musician, with the ability to hear music through sight and sound, a wonderfully sought-after and advantageous skill.
Sight-reading has many benefits, and through consistent practice you will find that it gets easier and easier, giving you the necessary skill as you work towards becoming a well rounded musician, more professional and talented with your instrument and musical ability. Whether you play guitar, piano, rhythm or lead (or even the drums) it is highly recommended that you take sight-reading seriously and work it into your practicing schedule.
Memory improvement techniques

The human brain is infinitely more sophisticated and complex than the world’s most powerful computers. One of the ways in which the human mind is so amazing and different from the computer is that it can be developed and enhanced through use of different exercises. These often simple exercises help improve the brain’s cognitive processes, allowing for greater amounts of information to be gathered and processed in much shorter periods of time.
